The most misquoted verse in the Bible
Proverbs 29:18 has been quoted at leadership conferences, church vision days, and business seminars around the world:
“Where there is no vision the people perish.”
It appears on church noticeboards. It opens strategy documents. It has been used to justify everything from building programmes to corporate mission statements.
There is one problem. That is not what the verse means.
The Hebrew word translated “vision” is חָזוֹן (chazon) — a term referring to prophetic revelation, God's disclosed will through His prophets. It has nothing to do with personal ambition or organisational planning.
The Hebrew word translated “perish” is יִפְרַע (yipparaʻ) — meaning to become unrestrained, to cast off moral discipline. Not to die. Not to fail. To lose moral order.
The verse is a wisdom saying about the necessity of divine revelation for moral and social coherence. Nothing more and nothing less.
Every major AI tool, asked for a hermeneutical analysis of this passage, will tell you something similar if you know how to ask. Most people don't know how to ask. And none of them will automatically warn you — without being asked — that this verse is the most misquoted in Scripture, that its primary meaning has nothing to do with leadership vision, and that any application to organisational planning requires a careful hermeneutical transfer that must be stated as such.
